It was pitch black, not a sound in the house. Everyone was sleeping; even the house itself seemed to sleep as well. Lying there I heard an ever so slight rumbling coming somewhere from deep inside of my closet. I scrunched down as far as I could beneath my white cotton blanket as I pulled it up over my face leaving only my eyes peering out into the darkness. I could hear my heart thumping inside of my ears and I just knew that something really awful was getting ready to happen. My body tightened with anticipation and I wanted to scream for help, yet my mouth formed no words.
My sister laid right next door and my brother only a little farther away, but nothing came out of my now paralyzed mouth. Suddenly, there it was, a hazy, barely pink mist floating lazily out of my open closet door, separating itself from amongst the outline of my clothing that was limply hanging inside.
At first I tried to convince myself that I was dreaming. I squeezed my eyes together as tightly as I could, but not daring to leave them closed for long, as I knew if this "thing" was real, I needed to keep an eye on it. But I thought if it was a dream this would surely wake me up. Or, if it was simply my imagination, then at the very least I would clear my eyes of any hazy particles that must be floating inside of them, and that would cause this apparition to cease.
